How to Play Chess
Basic Rules
- • Objective: Checkmate your opponent's king
- • White moves first: Players alternate turns
- • Each piece moves uniquely: Learn each piece's movement pattern
- • You cannot move into check: Your king must not be under attack
Piece Movements
- ♟ Pawn: Moves forward 1 square (or 2 from start), captures diagonally
- ♘ Knight: Moves in L-shape (2 squares + 1 square), jumps over pieces
- ♗ Bishop: Moves diagonally any distance
- ♖ Rook: Moves horizontally/vertically any distance
- ♕ Queen: Moves any direction any distance (most powerful)
- ♔ King: Moves 1 square in any direction (most important)
Strategy Tips
✓ Control the center of the board early
✓ Develop your pieces before attacking
✓ Protect your pieces from lower-value attackers
✓ Keep your king safe with castling when possible
✓ Look ahead several moves
✓ Don't leave pieces hanging undefended
